I have a lovely sister whom I haven't seen for ages! What is she up to again, I wonder? I remember how she dragged me along with her friends - -always acting as her chaperon when she goes to an out of town event, disco, karaoke, movie and even to the corner drugstore. But how can I complain when she treats me with a giant glass of English Trifle each time! Hmmm..no wonder I gained weight as a teenager...
Anyway, it must be my lucky day as who would have thought that I will find savoiardi at Big Lots! Yes - -totally unexpected and only $2.50 per pack too! I am so excited as I am dying to try some of the dolci recipe where these precious italian ladyfingers is the main event.
I was chopping the chocolates and left the milk and egg mixture on its own for a couple of minutes and oh no, I burned the bottom of the pan! Hmmm..This italian trifle needs tender loving care when you prepare it.
Mario Batali's version: Page 484
Maria B's version:
Mario used vanilla bean but since I have none, I used tbsp of vanilla extract instead
3 1/2 cups whole milk
grated zest of 1 lemon
2 tbsp vanilla (Mario used vanilla bean)
7 egg yolks
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
5 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
24 small savoiardi (italian ladyfingers)
1/4 cup limoncello or other sweet citrus liqueur
HERE'S HOW:
- Heat milk in saucepan. Add vanilla and lemon zest. Do not boil
- In a large bowl, combine egg yolks, flour and sugar. Whisk until mixture is pale yellow
- Gradually add half of the milk in the egg mixture, whisking constantly
- Place the egg mixture in the saucepan. Cook over low heat until thick
- Pour half of the cream in a bowl and let cool.
- Place chocolate on the remaining half until fully melted
- Split ladyfinger in half. Sprinkle with liqueur
- Place a layer of soaked ladyfinger in a large glass
- Top with a layer of cream, place another lady finger , and a layer of chocolate cream
- Repeat layering until all ingredients are used
- Cover and refrigerate for an hour before serving

^&^45689What a gorgeous, moving, heartbreaking book, and it might be hard to believe that it's Wall's debut novel, but it is.
